Anatomy of Sound: Sound Design in Film, Games, and Theatre

The same words 'sound design' mean three different disciplines across three different mediums — a linear film edit, an interactive game engine, and a live theatre hall don't run on the same rules.

The term 'sound design' is used today across a broad spectrum — from cinema to video games, from theatre to music production. Whatever the field, the core objective stays the same: giving the audience or user an auditory reality, emotional depth, and atmosphere. But because mediums differ in technical infrastructure and how they're consumed, the rules and categories of sound design shift significantly from one to the next. Film and games split into two structurally similar categories, while theatre is built entirely on live performance dynamics.

Sound Design in Film: Linear and Layered

In cinema, sound design is built entirely on a linear timeline. The audience is a passive receiver, experiencing the auditory journey the director and sound designer built from start to finish in the exact same order and intensity every time. That's why film sound design leans on precise synchronisation and dramatic intensity planned well in advance.

That linearity isn't a limitation — it's an advantage: the designer knows in advance, down to the frame, exactly what the audience will hear and when. That makes it possible to align music, effects, and dialogue precisely with dramatic beats, and to time surprises (a jump scare, a sudden silence) with mathematical precision — a certainty neither games nor theatre can offer.

  • Production Audio & Dialogue: cleaning up the original sounds recorded on set, re-recording lines in the studio via ADR (Automatic Dialogue Replacement) when needed, and setting the overall sound balance — the foundation of a film's intelligibility.
  • Ambience: the background layer that establishes a scene's sense of place — wind, city hum, a room's own tone.
  • Special Effects (SFX): large sounds that don't exist in reality or couldn't be captured on set — explosions, spaceships, natural phenomena.
  • Foley: reproducing micro-movements in the studio — footsteps, clothing rustle, the sound of handled objects — synced to picture with millisecond precision.

Sound Design in Games: Dynamic and Interactive

In video games, sound design is far more complex and non-linear than in film. The player is active — what they'll do and when can't be predicted in advance, so sound has to be triggered dynamically, in the moment.

That uncertainty forces the sound engine itself to act like a 'composer': the same music track shifts layers the instant the player enters combat (adaptive music), and the same footstep triggers a different sample depending on whether the ground is stone or grass. Middleware's real job isn't pre-recording and storing every possible scenario — it's combining a limited pool of sound assets under real-time rules to produce what feels like infinite variety.

  • Dynamic Environmental Sound: background audio that evolves instantly based on the player's biome, weather, time of day, or whether the space is indoor or outdoor — usually varied through layered systems in middleware like Wwise or FMOD.
  • Interactive / Triggered SFX: sounds fired within milliseconds of player actions — running, jumping, shooting, interacting with objects — or AI movement. The sound's spatial position is calculated in real time relative to the camera's angle and distance.

Sound Design in Theatre: Live and Space-Oriented

Unlike film and games, sound design in theatre serves live performance dynamics. The goal isn't only managing recorded sound — it's managing the acoustic space itself, and getting the actor's voice to the hall as naturally as possible.

No two theatre performances are ever quite identical — an actor might deliver a line half a beat slower one night, a stage technician might trigger a cue half a second late. That's why the sound operator functions less like someone pressing a pre-programmed 'play' button and more like a live musician following the moment, manually adjusting tempo and level as needed.

  • Acoustic Reinforcement and Miking: wireless microphone management and hall acoustics optimisation so actors' voices are heard as naturally and clearly as possible.
  • Timed Effects and Scene Atmosphere (Cues): music and effect transitions triggered at the exact right moment to mask scene changes, build dramatic tension, or establish a sense of place.
